Naked Fitness by Andrea Metcalf {REVIEW & GIVEAWAY}

I'm sure that most of you know my husband and I own the fitness center in our small community so I am always looking for the latest and greatest fitness and weight loss books on the market.  I want to see if the newest books have anything additional to offer the world.  Fortunately, "Naked Fitness" by Andrea Metcalf was offered to me for review and I jumped on the chance!  Andrea's approach to fitness and weight loss are almost identical to my own thoughts on the subjects.  Her program is not easy to do but it is simple enough for the lay person to understand with a huge dose of reality mixed in.  Andrea believes that weight loss is an accomplishment that requires exercise and a balanced diet.  By balanced, I don't mean grains and fruits and vegetables and dairy.  I mean balancing your protein, carbohydrate and fat intake to keep your blood sugar and hormone levels balanced.  Here's an excerpt from Andrea with some ideas for eating out while staying healthy:

Eating Out on the Naked Fitness Nutrition Plan
By Andrea Metcalf,
Author of Naked Fitness: The Proven 28 Day Lifestyle Program for a Slimmer, Fitter, Pain Free Body
It's normal to want to get out of the kitchen occasionally and let someone else do the cooking. But what about sticking to the plan? Will dining out strike a fatal blow to your resolve? Not necessarily. Most restaurants cater to health-conscious diners, it's not that difficult to find low-fat cuisine while dining out.

According to the National Restaurant Association, Americans eat out 4.1 times a week. And many of those meals are eaten at fast food restaurants, where food is typically high in fat and sodium. But dining out doesn't have to spell dieting disaster. One of the many advantages of the Naked Fitness Nutrition Plan is its adaptability to any eating-out situation. These days, healthy foods are served practically everywhere.

You don't have to be a recluse while on the Naked Fitness Nutrition Plan. You're free to go out to restaurants, even fast-food places, to enjoy breakfast, lunch, or dinner with your friends, family, or business associates. Nor should you pass up invitations to parties or other social events just because you're on a healthy eating program. What follows are some practical guidelines for making healthy choices at any type of restaurant, as well as for enjoying parties and other events.

Restaurants for Breakfast
  • Order scrambled eggs. Request that the eggs be cooked without added oil.
  • Fresh fruits are excellent choices to round out your breakfast.
Asian Restaurants
  • Select entrees made with lean proteins (such as chicken and fish) and vegetables. Some good suggestions are Moo Goo Gai Pan, Szechwan Shrimp or Chicken, and sushi.
  • Request that the sauce be served on the side or forgo it altogether.
  • Asian restaurants serve generous helpings. Consider ordering one entree and splitting it with a friend, unless you want to take the leftovers home.
  • Enjoy sushi and sashimi.
Italian Restaurants
  • For an appetizer, try vegetable antipasto (if available), with dressing on the side.
  • Look for entrees such as grilled chicken and fish, as well as Italian dishes that are marked as low in fat.
  • Avoid entrees prepared in cream sauce or Alfredo sauce.
  • Ask the waiter to leave the rolls and breadsticks in the kitchen.
  • When ordering a dinner salad, request dressing on the side.
  • Opt for steamed vegetables as your side dish rather than pasta. Make sure the vegetables are steamed.
Mexican Restaurants
  • Grilled chicken, shrimp, or lean meat entrees are good choices.
  • For extra veggies, request pico de gallo (a mixture of chopped tomatoes, green peppers, and onions).
  • Mexican rice or black bean soup are nice accompaniments to a Mexican meal. So are refried beans, but check first to see whether they are prepared in lard, or baked or boiled, and seasoned. If they aren't refried in lard, enjoy them.
  • A dinner salad with nonfat salad dressing is a healthy meal-starter.
Steakhouse
  • Order grilled lean meat, chicken, salmon, or other fish (prepared with- out oil).
  • For a side dish, select a steamed vegetable such as broccoli.
  • At the salad bar, stick to fresh vegetables. Many salad bars serve fresh fruit too, which makes for a great dessert.
Homestyle or Cafeteria Restaurant
  • Request grilled or lemon chicken, turkey breast without the gravy, or white fish prepared without sauce or oil.
  • Select steamed vegetables (no sauce or butter), salad with nonfat dressing, or a vegetable medley prepared without butter or margarine.
  • Look away when passing by the dessert line.
Fast-Food Restaurants
  • Most fast-food establishments have salads on their menus; grilled chicken salads are your best bets. Order reduced-fat salad dressing with your salad. If there's a salad bar, stick to fresh vegetables and fat-free salad dressing.
  • At fast-food restaurants that serve fish, order baked fish, steamed vegetables, and a salad.
Parties
  • Eat a meal before you go to the party to fend off hunger pangs and cravings.
  • Snack on fresh vegetables and fruit (but pass up the dip).
  • If you're going to dinner with a group of friends and are concerned that you'll overeat, eat some natural high-fiber foods (like raw vegetables or fruit) before you go.  You'll be less likely to pig out later.
  • Offer to bring a couple of your own dishes (low-fat, of course) to the gathering.
  • Instead of a cocktail, drink a diet soda or carbonated water with a twist of lemon or lime.
It may not seem like fun to limit yourself to certain foods when eating out. But the ability to make healthy choices at restaurants is one more positive step toward getting a beautifully naked body. You'll feel better, and your body will love you for it.

Ideal No Calorie Sweetener {REVIEW}

Sweets are a coveted item in my house but, being the owners of the gym in town, we try to keep ourselves in fairly good shape and away from the high calorie sweets.  I've found that when we do have cravings for sweet foods, using a product that is low or no calorie in the place of sugar can be a good alternative.  In fact, over the years I have experimented with no calorie sweeteners and baking and have found that those products usually don't do so well in baked goods.  The texture turns out all grainy and wrong and it doesn't satisfy the craving.  If you are like me and occasionally like to use a sweetener in baked goods, I think I've found a winner!  Ideal No Calorie Sweetener is a tolerable substitute and even bakes up nicely!

Ideal No Calorie Sweetener is made with Xylitol which you have probably heard about because it is used in many other sugar-free products like gum and pudding.  Xylitol is a naturally occurring sweetener found in many fruits and vegetables and is low on the glycemic index which makes it a great alternative for diabetics.  Xylitol has also been proven to increase dental health.  Ideal comes in four different varieties; Ideal No Calorie Sweetener in packets, Ideal No Calorie Sweetener in a 10.6 oz resealable pouch, Ideal No Calorie Brown Sweetener in a resealable pouch and Ideal Low Calorie Confectionery Sweetener in a resealable pouch (just like powdered sugar).  I received one of everything from Ideal to test out and report back to you my opinion.

I wanted to make sure that I made a couple of recipes from the Ideal website so that I could prepare a review that is accurate for you and get the full experience of the product.  I decided to make the Ideal Sugar Cookies and Ideal Buttercream Frosting.  The recipes were easy to make.  In fact, the hardest part of the recipe was rolling out the dough and cutting out the cookies!  The rest of the ingredients were all found in my pantry so there was nothing special needed besides the Ideal sweetener.  Right away, I noticed that the texture of the cookie was very similar to a sugar cookie made with granulated sugar.  I rolled them out and cut them into circles.  I then baked them for about 8-10 minutes or until they were golden around the edges.  My husband was not looking forward to trying these cookies because of past experiments with artificial sweeteners but he was surprised at how good they tasted!  They were the closest in both texture and flavor to cookies made with sugar than any other sweetener I've used.  The frosting was my favorite part!  I could tell no difference in flavor or texture.  In fact, I would like to try Ideal Low Calorie Confectionery Sugar in a cream cheese frosting recipe.  Here is a picture of some of my creations that I was practicing my piping skills on for my cake decorating class!

So, if you are diabetic, cook for a diabetic or are just looking for a good, low calorie alternative to sugar, check out Ideal products in your local store.  I think you'll be surprised at how similar to sugar it really is!

Disclosure:  I was provided with free samples of the product and asked for my honest opinion in exchange.  I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions are my own.

Walgreens Brand Health & Wellness Products {REVIEW}

This is a compensated post written by me on behalf of Walgreens. All opinions are 100% mine.

120x30_WalgrensTransparentLogo

You're going to think I'm crazy but one of the ways I like to relax is by going to a drug store and wandering the aisles.  I love looking at health & wellness products just to see what's new on the market and try one or two of those new products out.  This is why I was so thrilled when Walgreens was built in my community.  Walgreens has always been one of my favorite drug stores because the Walgreens Brand Health & Wellness Products are so reasonably priced and they have a wonderful selection of items both in the stores and online.  These products fit perfectly into any family's budget because they are priced below the brand name items yet still are Walgreens pharmacist recommended and have 100% satisfaction guaranteed because most are made with the same active ingredients as those brand name items.  Walgreens also has the Walgreens Way to Well Fund™ which provides free preventative testing and education within their local communities.  In fact, Walgreens donates over $3 million every year!

Pharmacist

I was fortunate enough to receive a Walgreens Brand Firm Toothbrush  from the Walgreens Brand Health & Wellness Products line to review for you.  The toothbrush came to my house at the perfect time because I was ready for a new one so I opened the package right away and brushed!  The size of the toothbrush head is just right for my small mouth because I often struggle with not being able to brush my teeth well enough or get to the back of my mouth with those large toothbrush heads.  This Walgreens Brand Firm Toothbrush was very easy to maneuver inside my mouth especially due to the neck which was flexible and bent slightly making it easier to reach the back areas.  I also love that this toothbrush has a tongue scraper on the back side of the head!  That's a feature that I look for in a toothbrush because when my tongue is clean, my whole mouth feel cleaner.  The only problem I had with this brush was that the bristles were too firm for me.  My gums were sore for a couple of days so, in the future, I will be purchasing medium or soft bristled toothbrushes.  All in all, this Walgreens Brand Firm Toothbrush was just as good as those brand name brushes at a fraction of the price, $0.99 to be exact!Advertisement

Smartfish Whirl Mini Notebook Laser Mouse {REVIEW}

Are you like me?  I spend a lot of time on my laptop and hate using the finger pad to move the cursor around the screen.  It's cumbersome and not big enough to get around the whole screen without lifting your finger off.  Let's not talk about the finger cramps and wrist pain from holding your hand in an unnatural position for that long.  A few years ago, I discovered the amazing invention of the wireless mouse!  Since then, I haven't turned back to using the finger pad unless I absolutely am forced.

Recently, I received an awesome product to use and review called the Smartfish Whirl Mini Notebook Laser Mouse w/Anti-Gravity Comfort Pivot.  I know it's a mouthful but this wireless mouse sits up slightly and pivots so that your wrist isn't in a bad position thus not placing stress on the tendons and reducing pain.  It's really comfortable to use because the mouse follows your wrist's natural movements.  Here's some info from the Smartfish Technologies website:

The ErgoMotion™ pivot system reduces your risk of Repetitive Stress Injury (RSI) by adding motion! The magic of the function is how it naturally adapts to your hand motion rather than the other way around! While all other computer mice require your hand and wrist to remain in a fixed position, the Whirl™ Mini pivots naturally as you move, automatically changing it’s angle infinitely to match your wrist and hand. The mouse will lean, swivel or pivot with your movement so your hand and wrist are never in a fixed position, creating the most comfortable and healthy mousing experience ever. This mouse rocks!

The Whirl Mini Notebook Laser Mouse w/Anti-Gravity Comfort Pivot comes in six different colors so that you can express your own personal style while keeping your hands in an ergonomic position.  I received the Carbon Fiber which matches just about everything because it's a contemporary mix of grey and black.  The mouse also comes in metallic red, metallic blue, metallic black, metallic white and silver so there's a color for everyone!

This mouse is such a nice change from my other mouse that sat flat on the table.  It really feels different to have your hand floating off the table and to have the mouse move with your hand's natural movements through the pivot.  The fact that it's a mini mouse is a plus for me because I have small hands and some of the wireless mouse products out there are too big for my hand which can cause cramping if I use it for too long.  The laser moves very smoothly on the screen and only requires two AAA batteries to work.  At $49.95, it's worth every penny especially if you plan on heavy usage.

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commissions 16 CFR, Part 255 Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising. Dreaming of a house...

I don't post much about me but I think I'm going to start writing more personal blog posts so that you can get a glimpse into my life and help me get rid of some worries and stress.  Lately, I've been spending a lot of time thinking about how nice it will be to live in a house again.  You see, my husband and I own a fitness center in a small community in Oregon which was hit pretty hard by the recession.  Over the last couple of years, our business has lost a significant amount of business because so many people have lost their jobs and can no longer pay for a fitness membership.  We are starting to see some signs of our community finally pulling out of this economy and are getting ready to move the business into a new building where the rent is almost 50% lower than where we've been for the past 4+ years.  That's quite a savings and with that savings we'll be able to pay ourselves a salary for the first time since opening up in 2006!  This means that we'll finally get to move out of the small 2 bedroom apartment we live in and possibly rent (or maybe even own) a single family house again.
Here are some of my wishes for a house:
  • A large kitchen with recessed lighting and lots of counter space so that I can cook without feeling claustrophobic
  • A nice sized family room that is located right off the kitchen
  • A master bedroom that fits our king bed and dresser comfortably
  • 2 extra rooms for guests and a den
  • 2 car attached garage
I don't think that's too much to ask for, do you?

Flu season is upon us!

I don't know about around your area, but the flu is running rampant in my town!  Everyone I talk to has sick kids or was recently sick or feels like they are getting sick.  Getting the flu shot this year was one of the best decisions I made because the flu season is definitely off to a strong start.  In fact, the USA Today published an article a few weeks ago which verified that the flu season is off and running in most states.  While it sounds like this is going to be a tough flu season with high numbers of cases, there doesn't appear to be any strands that we haven't already seen so people are building up immunities to them and shouldn't have as difficult a reaction as some did to H1N1 last year.  Thank goodness for this!

The good news is, even if you do get the flu, there are products out there to help you get through some of the hardest symptoms like nasal congestion and sinus pressure.  In fact, Advil Congestion Relief is a product that not only relieves nasal congestion but also uses the power of Advil to relieve sinus pressure, nasal swelling and headaches.  This is music to my ears because when I get sick, my headaches become unbearable unless I relieve them with medications.  Advil is already one of the pain relief brands that I like to use when I have headaches and muscle aches so by adding in a decongestant, Advil has created a wonderful product that helps me in multiple ways because taking less pills is definitely a plus in my book!  While I haven't been sick, yet, the season is till young so I plan on keeping Advil Congestion Relief close at hand if the need should arise.

Disclosure: I was provided Advil Congestion Relief information, gratis samples and coupons by Pfizer Consumer Healthcare in exchange for my post.  All opinions are my own.  I am a member of the One 2 One Network and am blogging for the opportunity to win a gift card.

Apples or bananas?
